That picture of Sora is from some promo CGI picture for KH2.

Number 4 Diggy dog!

Ryo Hazuki
Company: Sega Am2
Series: Shenmue

I bet no one expected him! Ryo Hazuki takes the number 4 spot. Shenmue was the most expensive game ever when it was released in 2000. Sega Am2, led by Yu Suzuki created a mirror image of Japan in the mid 1980s. Suzuki created both Shenmue 1 and 2 for the Sega Saturn, and had originally planed the main character to be a young Akira, from the Virtua Fighter series. A good amount of the game was made for the Saturn, and even still the pictures and videos prove to be the best graphics on Saturn. The game was moved towards the Dreamcast where it became reality. Ryo Hazuki, a 18 year old, comes home one day to find father murdered at the hands of a man named Lan Di. There on, Ryo is on a quest to avenge his fathers death. What sets Ryo out from other characters is you, the player, get a better connection with a character than in any other game, because you\'re essentially Ryo. You decide where to, look, when to sleep, what to buy, even what to say. On Ryo\'s quest he gradually becomes stronger in the martial arts, so you have to remember all his skills and moves, which at times is very challenging. You easily get absorbed into the storyline, that is unless you have no attention span what-so-ever. Through Shenmue 1 and 2 you never actually get to face Lan Di, because the game is set in 7 games (which might be cut down). There\'s one scene where Lan Di and Ryo stare each other down, that the intense of it is simply amazing. Ryo\'s personality is probably the most developed of any character, because you spend so much time just building it up. Shenmue is not for gamers who have no attention, hell there\'s spots in the game in which Ryo just talks to someone for an hour or more.

Top 3 coming up!!

Not until you mentioned it xD.

@ZiG, I don\'t think Shit Raider is going to make the list. In case she does, then tell her I said Tomb Raider. Otherwise she\'ll blow up my septic tank and, here\'s the joke. \"Raid my shit.\"

j00r list fails if there isn\'t TEH Duke Nukem on it. Or Angel from KOF. Or the \"T\" brick from TetRis.

ZOMG!

Just some interesting things regarding VFRPG....I was able to work out that Virtua Fighter 1 is set in 1993--which is in fact the year it was released, appropriately enough. Akira\'s birthday we know is in 1968, and in VF1 his age is 25. All of the other character\'s ages work out too. So in 1986, Akira would have been 18, like Ryo! So this would seem to confirm that VFRPG was intended to be set before the first Virtua Fighter game, in September 1986, perhaps the first day in the game was Akira\'s Birthday (23rd September), like in Shenmue the first day is Ryo\'s (29th November). ~Miles Prower~
Is this picture really Akira, just looks like a dubed Ryu. :a?:

Actually, english version of Shenmue 2 came out here (in Europe) first, for the Dreamcast. We got some Japanese stuff that NA didn\'t, but it\'s a small compensation. Doushin the Giant (GameCube), for example. A very interesting/original game - and it was cheep, too.

But damn it if Ryo isn\'t a wuss. I mean, his mother gets all bitchy if he comes home late!

@Rizo
That\'s what I mean... PAL version of Shenmue 2 has Japanese voices and english subs! Perfect, I\'d say.

@shadic
Sora, shadic!? Really, he\'s just an random anime kid with spiky hear. There\'s absolutely no \"weight\" to his character whatsoever. I know you like Kingdom Hearts, but this is the only fault of your list, so far. (OK, I also disagree with Ratchet & Clank choice.) I REALLY appreciate Crash Bandicoot. Both Jak/Dex and Crash are awesome designs.

@Jason
Duke Nukem need not to be on any greatest VG character top 10 lists. He\'s just a good mix-up of stereotypes and catch-phrases, and I\'d put him somewhere between 40-50, myself.

I have both versions, my brother downloaded the European version when we didnt have a Xbox.

As Fugen said, the DC version is somewhat better.. It\'s also has the \"continue your save\" feature, in which you could obtain all your things from the first game.

Well, it\'s not a real picture...Really. It how the Akira design would look with if it was transfered to Dreamcast, but once the game made the switch between the two consoles they changed the character to be Ryo, rather than a young Akira.

You can see the similarities between the two designs (picture being from Virtua Fighter 5, which is set to be released in arcade soon)

He looks allot meaner there than in Shenmue, I always had the idea of Lan Dee being Ryu\'s real father.
