Financial Times, 07.07.2007

In cafés and living rooms around Serbia, millions of television viewers have learnt a new vocabulary: \"tie break\" and \"drop shot\" have entered local parlance as the success of Serbian tennis players at Wimbledon has created a nation of tennis fans.

For a country with a political image problem, the sporting success of a handful of individuals has given Serbia a welcome boost on the international stage. Serbs, more accustomed to western pressure over fugitive 1990s war crimes suspects, applauded on seeing officials from their tennis federation seated in the royal box

Ana Ivanovic, the 19-year-old who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals, says she practised her forehand in a dry swimming pool between Nato air raids eight years ago.

At last month\'s French Open, Ms Ivanovic lost to Belgium\'s Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final, while 22-year-old Jelena Jankovic went out in the semis.

The two women, along with rising star Novak Djokovic, who at 20 is a year younger than Britain\'s Andy Murray, returned from Paris as heroes, striding on to the balcony of Belgrade city hall before an ecstatic crowd of tens of thousands.

The president and prime minister congratulated the three - a cynical move given the state\'s lack of support for tennis over the years, says Bratislav Grubacic, a political commentator in Belgrade.

\"Politicians are now trying to say this is fantastic - our tennis players are promoting Serbia. The state is trying to take the feathers from these young players\' caps,\" Mr Grubacic says.

The former Yugoslavia produced few international tennis stars. The best known, Monika Seles, won her first Grand Slam singles title at the 1990 French Open.

But behind the gloss produced by Serbia\'s tennis stars, the rehabilitation of the largest ex-Yugoslav republic remains incomplete. Pre-accession talks with the European Union are on again, yet Belgrade\'s hopes for EU candidate status by the end of next year remain conditional on arresting Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb wartime commander accused of genocide.

Serbia is also bogged down by the dispute over the future of its breakaway province, Kosovo - the subject of wrangling at the United Nations Security Council. Nato air power backing ethnic Albanian rebels pushed Serb forces out in 1999, two years before Belgrade\'s \"democratic revolution\" brought down the strongman leader Slobodan Milosevic.

Mr Djokovic, who plays in a semi-final at Wimbledon today, has proudly cited his Kosovo Serb family origins.

Tennis has lured Serb interest away from the traditional sporting obsessions of basketball and football.

\"Now we\'ve downsized to tennis - a smaller ball for a smaller state,\" says Marko Vranjes, a student watching Wimbledon this week. \"Next we\'ll be champions in ping pong or marbles.\"

\"Cute\" and \"hot\" apparently mean \"fat\" and \"ugly\", judging from Iggy\'s post.

I really loathe politics and anyone involved in it, though. ^^

Politics? Our (idiotic) goverment and related scum involved in politics dont have anything to do with it! They didnt gave one dinar (our currency) to those tennis players they like to asociate themself with now since they \"made it\"... its Eurosong all over again.

^:lol::yes:
Ana is hot. <3 Janković has a, mildly said, weird face. :/
I\'m surprised by Djoković too, but day before he played with Nadal he had a 5 hour match with Baghdatis. Tho, if he had won the tie break when he was leading 2-0 in sets he would
have won.
I\'m glad Federer won. Nobody lieks Nadal.
Did anyone watch the mixed doubles finals? Jelena and Murray kept smiling, even when they were losing. :)
BTW Djoković is now ranked 3rd on the ATP list. :D
1st Federer , R. 7290
2nd Nadal , R. 5225
3rd Djokovic , N. 3310
4th Roddick , A. 3230
5th Davydenko , N. 3185
6th Gonzalez , F. 2780
7th Gasquet , R. 2220
8th Robredo , T. 2200
9th Blake , J. 2075
10th Berdych , T. 2045

and another one

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Think what u wanna think. Nadal is a buffed and probably learned to ignore pain :p.

ATP list proves just how much of a gap is between the first 2 places, and the rest of the players.
